As all are welcomed into our community, the safety and respect of each person is important to us, especially our children.

Each parish has a Coordinator of Safe Environment. This person makes sure that all volunteers who are working with minors have completed their background checks and Safe Haven program. This person also oversees the safety of the building when chidren are present. For instance, when there is a class with minors in it, that there are two adults present. This person works with the Diocese to ensure that all the records are up to date. They also prepare for any trips or lockins that take place making sure that those present have completed the necessary training and are in compliance with the Code and Policy. This person oversees that all students learn about safety within their environment through a program called Circles of Care.
For Adults
Begining in 2001, all clergy, parish and school staff and volunteers who work with minors have been required to attend a workshop called Protecting God's Children. In this program, adults learned their responsibility in reporting abuse and neglect of monors, how to keep minors safe, and what the guidelines are for the Diocese. Today, this workshop has evolved into Safe Haven, is also offered online, and has a required refresher course every 4 years. As part of this process, a criminal background check is also required every 4 years.
Each year, the Bishop reviews and adjusts as need the Policy for the Protectection of children and young people and the Code of Conduct, in which all clergy, staff and volunteers (who work with minors) must read and sign that they understand the material.
